Another comfort measure used often in labor is the birthing ball, sometimes called exercise balls in gyms. Sitting on a birthing ball widens the pelvis and allows the baby to descend properly. You might also feel more comfortable sitting on something with a little give. Let your partner help you onto the birthing ball and stay close to help with your balance.

Birthing balls can also be placed against the wall and you can lean into it with your back. Spread your legs a little wider  be able to lunge from side to side, which also helps with the baby's descent. And the third use is hanging over the birthing ball on the bed. The pressure of the ball on the abdomen can help move the baby down.

Many birthing facilities may have a birthing ball on hand, but my advice is to buy one ahead of time, so you can also use it at home when labor begins. You can then carry it in with you and use it at your hospital or birthing center. When you buy it, make sure it is big enough for you so you are actually sitting on it instead of squatting.

My only other advice is to buy the air pump with it. It makes blowing up the ball so much easier - for your partner. You will find having the birthing ball around after you deliver will help you get back into shape faster. They are great to do sit-ups on. Please note that it is important to find the right size birthing ball depending on your height.
