Laugh and Learn About Newborn Baby Care
The following are some of the most common questions that I hear almost every day regarding newborn baby care. I hope you will find the answers to some of yours.
Sheri, do I need to bathe my newborn everyday?
No, it is recommended to only bathe your baby 2-3 times a week at the beginning because the baby’s skin can become to dry.
Do I need to comb/brush the baby’s scalp even if they are bald?
Absolutely. You need to comb/brush your baby’s scalp every day to prevent “Cradle Cap”. Cradle cap is an accumulation of dirt, oils and perspiration that can collect on the baby’s scalp and becomes a red raised rash which is very hard to get rid of once they get it. By shampooing the scalp 2-3 times a week and combing/brushing on a daily basis, you can prevent it.
How long do I need to sponge bathe the baby?
You should switch from sponge baths to tub baths when the baby’s umbilical cord falls off which should happen around 7-10 days after delivery.
What is the best way to test the temperature of the bath water?
One of the funniest items I have seen on the market is a ducky bath water thermometer. Testing bath water is as simple as placing your wrist or elbow in the basin and checking if it is warm. Babies like nice warm baths, just like yourselves. If it is not the right temperature for them, they will let you know.
Is there any one diaper that is better than the others?
My advice on this subject is to try a few different brands before you will know what works best for your baby. Some are cut to fit slimmer babies, while others fit chubbier babies. Don’t buy any diaper in bulk until you know that you have found the right diaper for your baby.
How do you swaddle and how long will a baby enjoy being swaddled?
Babies enjoyed being swaddled for at least 6 weeks and sometimes longer. They are often calmer when swaddled and will sleep longer.
