Laugh and Learn About Breastfeeding
The following are some of the most common questions regarding breastfeeding that I hear almost every day. I hope you will find the answers to some of yours:
Sheri, does Breastfeeding hurt?
Some books you read say if it hurts, you’re doing it wrong. That is actually incorrect. Most women experience some discomfort, if not outright pain when they first latch a baby on. I call it an “eyes watering – toes curling experience”. However within a couple of minutes, it should become tolerable. If it is tolerable, it is correct. If it is still excruciating, re-latch the baby. Most soreness dissipates within 2 weeks.
What makes you qualified?
I am a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for the last 15 years and have been teaching Breastfeeding classes for 30 years. I am a mother of twin boys and nursed them for 9 month. If I can do it, anybody can.
Why do I need to take a Breastfeeding Class?
While Breastfeeding is a natural process, it’s mostly a learned art. The more you know, the less problems you will have. After attending a class, you will be aware of the obstacles and know how to handle them.
Can I prepare for Breastfeeding before the baby comes?
The more you know beforehand, the better. If you can attend a class, or watch these videos prior to your delivery, they will greatly help. You will know what to expect as well as know the obstacles that may occur.
When should I start taking classes?
It is recommended the class should end 2 – 4 weeks before the baby is due. That’s in case the baby is early you’re prepared, yet not so far in the past that the information you learned is forgotten.
If I attend a breastfeeding class, why should I get yours on video?
The big advantage is, that you can review often after you deliver especially if you are facing specific obstacles. Also, if you take a Breastfeeding Class, you will practice the positions with dolls. Breastfeeding a doll is not the same thing as Breastfeeding a live baby. In this online class we show live demonstrations of both holds and positions. Once you are at home, seeing a real mom breastfeeding on the video, with all the different positions, will help you, to overcome the obstacles, especially if you have twin
How do I know the baby is getting enough?
There are three ways to know if the baby is getting enough.
1) After the milk comes in, the baby should have lots of wet and dirty diapers on a daily basis.
2) The baby should be calm and sleepy after a good feed (similar to how you feel after a big Thanksgiving meal).
3) The baby should be gaining weight appropriately – as checked by your pediatrician.
For partners, should they also watch your breastfeeding class?
Two sets of ears are always better than one. Pregnant women have little memory and their partners can be a great support, if they know what is going on.
I already attended a breastfeeding class with my first pregnancy, why should I watch your videos?
A second timer often wants a refresher to remind them of what they learned the first time. The video makes it much more convenient, without the cost of a babysitter and the time it takes to go to classes.
